1974:
Cyndi Lauper Joins Long Island Cover Band
Queens native Cyndi Lauper first began singing
for fun while growing up in Ozone Park After
dropping out of high school in 1970, she worked
at odd
jobs, including a stint as a horse walker
at Belmont Racetrack.
In 1974, Lauper launched her singing career
by becoming the lead singer and dancer for
Long Island cover band, Doc West, singing
Top 40 hits like "I've Got the Music
in Me."

Lauper later sang with other New York area
groups, including Flyer and Blue Angel, before
becoming a nationally known artist.
In 1983, with the release of her first solo
album, "She's So Unusual," Lauper
became the first female artist to score four
Top Five singles from a debut album. They
included "Girls Just Want To Have Fun"
and "Time After Time." She is shown
here in a photo from 1970.
